Langkawi Chinese New Year 2027: Crowds and Ramadan

Short answer: Chinese New Year 2027 lands on a weekend, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, and Ramadan is expected to start the very next day. That overlap is the thing most planning pages miss. If your trip ends on Sunday, expect a busy island. If it runs into the following week, you are in Langkawi for the first days of fasting, and the island works differently.
This guide covers Langkawi Chinese New Year 2027: the exact dates, who is likely to be travelling, what the ferry rules mean for your ticket, what changes once Ramadan starts, and how to book. We tie every figure to a source and say plainly where we could not find one.

Book Your StayChinese New Year 2027 dates: a weekend, then Ramadan
Malaysia's 2027 holiday list gives Chinese New Year as Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February. Kedah, Langkawi's state, also lists Awal Ramadan, the first day of the fasting month, as a state holiday on Monday 8 February. The list is marked subject to change for the Islamic dates. The table puts the days side by side.
| Date | What it is | Why it matters on the island |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 5 Feb | Chinese New Year's Eve (our calculation) | Our guess: the heaviest arrival day for holiday trips |
| Sat 6 and Sun 7 Feb | Chinese New Year, Malaysian public holiday | Our read: peak days for attractions |
| Mon 8 Feb | Extra public holiday in Singapore; expected first day of Ramadan, state holiday in Kedah | Singapore visitors can stay the extra night; fasting begins |
| Expected 8 Feb to 9 Mar | Ramadan, subject to moon sighting | Slower daytime, livelier evenings |
| Expected 10 and 11 Mar | Hari Raya Aidilfitri | Outside this guide |
Two details are worth knowing. The Malaysian lists we read show no weekday replacement for a Saturday and Sunday holiday, so Malaysian workers get a plain weekend. We could not check that against the official Cabinet PDF. Singapore is different: its Ministry of Manpower lists Monday 8 February as an extra public holiday, which gives Singapore residents Saturday to Monday.
Who is likely to be on the island
We found no 2027 occupancy data, so this section is precedent, not prediction. When Chinese New Year fell on 25 January 2020, Bernama reported that Langkawi's main attractions were packed with local and foreign visitors. The SkyCab took more than 12,000 people on 25 and 26 January, against a stated capacity of up to 10,000 a day when running 60 gondolas. Crocodile Adventureland, Dataran Lang and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park were also named.
That is one weekend, seven years old, and from before the pandemic. In our read it still shows which places fill first: the ones reached by a single queue. Our cable car and Sky Bridge crowd strategy and Kilim Geoforest guide both apply, with one change: on 6 and 7 February, go as early as the doors open or pick another day.
Ferry rules that decide your ticket
If you cross from the mainland, the operator's own rules matter more than the schedule. The Langkawi Ferry Line site says peak periods are weekends, school and public holidays and special events, mornings are busier, and crowds usually ease after 2:00 PM. We read the rules for this one operator only.
- Online sales stop 24 hours before departure. Buy by the previous morning at the latest, not on the jetty.
- Arrive 60 minutes early. The operator says Langkawi departures can have longer customs checks.
- No changes or refunds after payment. Pick the sailing as if it were a flight.
- Online bookings cap at 10 passengers. Larger groups must split, and split groups are not guaranteed the same departure. For a family reunion, that is the rule to plan around.
On fares, the sources disagree. The Star reported on 10 April 2026 that the operator raised non-MyKad fares by RM10 from 15 April, to RM45 adult and RM35 child from Kuala Perlis, and RM55 and RM42 from Kuala Kedah. MyKad holders stayed at RM21 and RM16 from Kuala Perlis. The operator's booking page showed lower "Local" fares (RM15 adult from Kuala Perlis) with no MyKad split. We cannot say which is current, so confirm before you pay. Our how to get to Langkawi guide compares ferries with flying, and the operator says its online schedules are usually updated every three months.
Weather in February 2027: hot, before the peak
February sits in the dry part of the year, but numbers vary. One weather site gave February rainfall as 47 mm in its summary and 137 mm further down the same page, and daytime highs of 34°C and 32°C. We would not quote either. Its sea temperature figure, 29°C, did not conflict.
The more useful forecast is about heat. MetMalaysia's director-general said in September 2026 that the super El Niño should peak around the March to April 2027 equinox, and that the northern states, including Kedah, would be among the first to feel it. February is the run-up. Pack for hot days and plan outdoor time for the morning. Our December guide covers the same El Niño in more detail.
If your trip runs into Ramadan
A trip that ends on 7 February is unaffected. One that goes past it overlaps with the first days of fasting. Wego's guide describes Langkawi as slowing during fasting hours and getting lively after sunset, with a Kuah bazaar and resort iftars.
On food, Wonderful Malaysia's Ramadan tips say Muslim-run restaurants and cafes are often closed in the daytime, while non-Muslim-run eateries may stay open, sometimes with adjusted hours. Accommodation restaurants are typically open unless locally run. The same page asks visitors to avoid eating and drinking in public during the day in Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu. It is undated, so treat it as general guidance. Our Malay breakfast guide is written for normal weeks, and the stalls in our night market food guide may follow different hours.
Nightlife is the part we cannot call. In 2023 the Langkawi district office relaxed an earlier Ramadan entertainment ban under conditions (The Vibes, 7 April 2023), so the rules have moved year to year. We found nothing for 2027. If a bar or live music night is part of your plan, ask your accommodation in January.
Before 8 February, expect crowds and open kitchens. After it, expect quiet days, closed daytime cafes and long evenings.
How to book Langkawi for Chinese New Year
Decide first which Langkawi you want, because the two halves of the week are different trips. Our best time to visit Langkawi guide has the wider seasonal picture.
- Plan A, the holiday weekend (5 to 7 February). Book the room and the ferry or flight together, buy the ferry the day before at the latest, and keep one flexible attraction day.
- Plan B, the week after (9 February onward). Quieter attractions, a hot island, and Ramadan hours. Good for beach mornings and evening bazaars.
- Compare prices for both. Price the same room for Friday 5 February and Tuesday 9 February. The gap is the holiday premium, and we did not check it for you.
- Check the cancellation terms. A moon-sighting shift of one day should not cost you a night.
If you want somewhere calmer than the beach strip, we run Bambu Getaway inland, about 15 minutes from the airport. Our where to stay guide compares the options, and the budget guide helps set the daily number before you pick dates.
Common questions
When is Chinese New Year 2027 in Langkawi?
Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2027. The Malaysian holiday lists we read show no weekday replacement, so Malaysians get a normal weekend. Singapore adds Monday 8 February as an extra public holiday, which makes a three-day weekend there.
Is Langkawi busy during Chinese New Year?
It has been. Bernama reported the SkyCab cable car took more than 12,000 visitors on 25 and 26 January 2020, the Chinese New Year weekend that year. We found no 2027 occupancy figures, so treat that as precedent, not a forecast.
Does Ramadan overlap with Chinese New Year 2027?
Almost. Ramadan is expected to start on Monday 8 February 2027, the day after Chinese New Year ends, and Kedah lists it as a state holiday. The date depends on moon sighting, so it can shift by a day.
Are restaurants open in Langkawi during Ramadan?
Many are, but not all. Muslim-run cafes and restaurants are often closed in the daytime, while non-Muslim-run places may stay open with adjusted hours. Hotel restaurants are usually open unless locally run. Eat discreetly in public during the day.
How far ahead can you buy Langkawi ferry tickets?
On the Langkawi Ferry Line site, online sales stop within 24 hours of departure. Arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes early. After payment there are no changes or refunds, so pick the sailing carefully.
Will Langkawi be hot in February 2027?
Yes, but the worst heat is expected later. MetMalaysia says the super El Niño heat peak should come around March to April 2027, with the northern states among the first affected. February should be hot and mostly dry.
